Cookie reckoned we could get all the way back to town today if we got up early enough and really went for it. Sounded hardcore to me. It’d taken us three days to get up here, a couple were half days, but still. It’s a loooong old way, but I was up for it. Once you’ve decided you’re headed to town, and there’s a comfy bed and beer waiting for you, it’s amazing what you can do! Cookie reckons it was 17 miles or so, over rough tricky ground. Takes a bit of concentrating to pick your way over it at a good pace. But once you get in the flow of it you can get through more than you think each hour. I was even keeping pace with Cookie for a lot of the day. That’s pretty good work for me :)
I was well impressed with Nicky today, I thought we could make it out in a day because the forecast was for fine weather. When we woke up to low cloud and rain, I wasn’t so sure.. Nicky Doesn’t like slipping much and usually goes super slow when there’s any chance of a fall, like when it’s rooty and wet..
But all these weeks on the trail are finally paying off, her agility and coordination are much improved, she was expertly stepping between roots and rocks without breaking her stride and keeping up with me as fast as I could go. Even when she did slip, instead of the usual ‘scream then thud’, all I heard was a “whoopsie”, as she caught herself before falling and carried straight on.
