More ‘up’ today. We’d aimed to get over the infamous Waiau Pass this afternoon but getting up there took a lot longer than I thought! Mainly all the ‘sidling’ across the cliff tops to get around the lake. Confused as to why the trail didn’t take us around the east edge of the lake where there looked to be a strip of ‘beach’ all round. Were the scree falls too dangerous there? Would we have been bonked on the head by rocks perhaps? The precarious climb down a gully/stream this way seemed more risky to me! :)
I agree with Nicky, the other side of the lake looked a much better than this way. Don’t go that way though! There are some rocky bluffs at the start which are presumably impassable, nothing an odd wire rope and a few staples could sort out DOC ;)
