There’s a big ol’ valley to get down, it’ll take a day or more to clamber through but it spells the way out to Lake Hawea. Yes! Making progress!
Some hair raising sidling to be done at the beginning of the bush line down into the beech forest. High, steep, narrow, and slanted towards the drop. A thin covering of the usual tiny beech leaves underfoot. Even though I occasionally find I’m holding my breath on these bits, they’re becoming more of a normal part of life ;) I think when I eventually have to walk on flat pavements again everyday it might even be a bit boring :)
We gave Top Timaru Hut a miss, it was too early in the day to stop and the wrong side of the river to bother popping in. We’ve been so much slower on this section than planned, we’re in real danger of running out of food before we reach Lake Hawea, so we’ve got to get a move on!
