Phew. THANK GOD, firstly, that we didn’t have to camp up on the pass in this, and secondly that we’re not trying to shimmy down a slippery wet rock gully or ‘rock slide’ ( as the notes put it ) on Rabbit Pass in the pissing rain. Jesus. A lucky escape!
We’d been told there was a jetboat scheduled to pick up near the next hut at 1.30pm, so we had to get a move on to catch it. Retracing your steps has it’s advantages, we were now familiar with this valley and the bits of trail which were a bit crap and slow progress. Forgetting about the track, or any attempt to keep feet dry, we set a course straight down middle of the valley, crossing the Wilkin many times to find the fastest terrain and most direct route.
We made it down to Kerin Forks Hut by 12.30pm, that was about 4 hours down, compared to the 7 hours we took on the way up! It’s amazing what you can do when you know there’s a beer waiting for you at the end ;)
