I am about as good with early starts as I am with heights. Not brilliant! But now we were over the hard stuff we knew there was some long but easy stretches ahead. So we decided to see if we could shave a day off and get tucked up in a comfy motel bed one day early! And so “on with the head torches” it was, and with eyes wedged open we struck out into the murky mist, crossing streams, bogs, and thick grassy meadows.
I was absolutely shattered! The old noggin doesn’t function well before about 11am ;) So 5am felt a pretty hardcore time to get up. I know hikers have a reputation for being early risers but I don’t think I was born with the hiker gene ;)
We managed to do 20 miles yesterday, a new record! So slightly less to do today, 16 miles to Lewis Pass Road. From there we have a long double hitch into Hanmer Springs, so don’t want to get to the road too late or all the shops will be shut by the time we get to town.
I decided to get Nicky up at 5am this morning, so we could make an early start up Anne Saddle before the sun even came up. I’ve got experience of climbing high peaks by torchlight before, but I don’t think Nicky was too keen on the lack of visibility. It was actually pretty good though, there was still a big moon in the sky to light the way.
