Our lunch stop at the imaginatively named ‘No.3 Hut’ included gasping at the thought of scrambling down from the top bunk in the night for a wee. If you’re a multi-night-wee-er like me the odds of surviving til dawn without serous injury woulda seriously shortened. They were HIGH! And that’s coming from someone who’s been over Waiau Pass ;) That said, i love that they’re still here. Names carved in date back to the early ’60s, I doubt health and safety would ever let you build ’em now :)
Nicky claims to of seen a three tier bed before, but never in all my life have I seen a bunk bed soooo big! I had to climb the vertigo inducing ladder to see what it was like at the top of a triple decker bunk – quite frightening, all that’s keeping you from rolling off is a 6 inch high thin slither of wood.. Extra wide mattresses though, I’d be happy to see those make a come back DOC.
