Just as I was about to come to terms with my hatred for this section, the storm came. What looked like a wall of grey obscuring the way we’d come, was forcing it’s way down the valley above us. Shit. “Camping might be interesting tonight”, I thought to myself, as the wind picked up, roaring down the groove in the mountains. I set to work building a wall of stones around the windward side of the tent, to keep out the blustery gusts and inevitable rainfall. Let’s fortify this bugger! :D
Once we got down to the East Ahuriri River things started to improve and our pace picked up. The going got tough again just before the Derelict Hut, but that’s where we realised we’d missed the poles leave the valley and were now much higher up on the true right of the river! With a storm raging at the head of the valley and strong winds blowing the rain down, we decided to camp quick before we got a proper soaking.
