Through the gorge we went, hopping over and back, over and back, across the big river. After those weeks of hot sun before, it’s been pouring down for the last few days. The water has risen, more murky than before, the flow is faster, and the sound of the water more crashing. The rivers feel more out of control than before, less tame and with a mind of their own.
Heavy rain in the night produced added force for the waterfall to carve it’s smooth curves in the rock below the bridge. With channels as formed as a water slide it almost looked to be a smooth ride up right up until the pulverising on the lower tier. I’ll give it a miss :)
Yeah very poor weather today, so I kept my camera safe inside my pack, not many photos of Waitawheta Gorge I’m afraid..
There’s often a high bridge slung over the Waitawheta River (like from where this picture is taken), but it seems where DOC think there’s an easy stepping-stone crossing they haven’t bothered. Problem is with the water levels quite high, there’s not many stepping stones left for us that are high and dry.. Just enough though, we made it through and only fell in once!
