Creepy this place. Made you feel edgy. The clearing reminded me of the cover of Where the Wild Things Are. But with a more sinister overtone about it… Chunky spiders hanging here and there. Wet ferns tickling your legs and insects hitting your face. Flax leaves scraping together in the wet misty breeze. Weird noises in the depths of the foliage. Gave me the creeps! “Get the flippin’ tent up and get in it!”
We were hoping to get to Waitawheta Hut by this evening, but didn’t quite make it.. Found this flatterned peice of ground, where something looks to of once been and decided to call it a day.
We woke up the next morning to the sound of heavy rain on the fly sheet, so turned over and went back to sleep. Next time we woke it sounded much better, so we packed up our stuff, in what turned out to be the only brief window of light rain all day.
