So bloody happy to see this hut I can tell you! Walking and sleeping out in the mud and rain for days-on-end becomes a bit of an arse after a time. Forcing yourself to be upbeat and cheerful whilst dripping with water in the cold is only possible for so long! All your energy becomes focused on getting to the hut no matter how shattered you are. Like some kind of in-ignorable instinctual yearning. “Must get to hut” looping round your subconscious in a caveman-like fashion. My conscious mind tortured with an insanity inducing, and impossible to remove, never ending loop of Lionel Richie’s “Hello”, triggered by a repetitive native bird call ( the bastard seems to be following me! ) :)
The native Tui birds are supposed to be excellent mimics. So faced with an entire universe of musical history to pluck from, why Lionel Richie has become the fixation god only knows. I’m with Team Possum – let’s bloody eat the bastards!
The Hut was awesome. There was a roof on it, a log fire, a mattress, and a pack of cards. We had the rum with us. What else do you need?
Really enjoyed getting this little stove fired up once we got to the hut. Not only to heat us up and dry our gear, but mainly for the pure pleasure of playing with fire, there’s been too few opportunities so far. Plus we could toast our Mountain Bread on top of it, awesome!
Cooking Mountain Bread on the Stove:
