The station we’re walking through has been abandoned to rabbits. The ground absolutely riddled with holes, and the grass munched to tiny stubs. But out in the open, we got on form and started to nail the miles down the Ahuriri East Branch towards the main river. A little anticipation on the way there, as we’ve heard it can be fierce, and can be hard to cross…
I was expecting this huge valley to be lush cow munching country, but it was completely barren. The only things thriving here were the rabbits and this pine forest on our left. We couldn’t make head nor tail of the planting though, very thin lines of trees, lots of scrub in-between, maybe it had some purpose other than tree production?
